The History of Miao People Crafts
Here at it&itself Jewelry, we are passionate about sharing the history and culture of the Miao people, who live in remote China.
All of our jewelry is handmade by the Miao people, but you maybe unaware of their rich and fascinating history.
The Miao people can be traced all the wayback to the pre-Qin period, which was between 2,100 and 221 BC.
While their people were originally associated with the Yangtze River area, they then migrated around the country to the Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, and Hubei provinces.
During this long and rich history, the clothing and jewelry they still make to this day were introduced.
The most common characteristics of Miao people’s crafts and their clothing are their intricate embroideries and the silver ornaments and headdresses.
Silver is a symbol of wealth for women and isa valuable part of their traditions and heritage.
The Miao people have always been at one with nature, and this is reflected in the patterns that are often seen in the embroidery.
Flowers, animals, dragons, and butterflies are commonly included, but they also use more abstract patterns.
The seasons are reflected in the various designs, which use a wide variety of colours to share messages of hope and goodwill.
As the Miao people were spread between various provinces of China, the clothing and accessories vary between regions.
There are up to 100 different varieties, but you can be sure each one is as beautiful and unique as the others.
Their traditional crafts have been passed down from generation to generation, preserving these beautiful traditions for thousands of years.
In each of the items we showcase on our site and Instagram page, you’ll see the cultural heritage and tradition of the Miao people.
While all of our pieces are reflective of their rich history, you’ll find they are easy to incorporate into your modern-day outfits and life.
